What is Xerostomia (Dry Mouth)?

Dry mouth, medically known as xerostomia, occurs when your body doesn't produce enough saliva. This condition can lead to a range of uncomfortable symptoms, including:

  • A sticky or dry feeling in the mouth and throat
  • Bad breath
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or tasting
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Plaque and tartar buildup on teeth and gums
  • Mouth sores
  • Challenges wearing dentures

Without sufficient saliva to wash away food particles and neutralize acids, plaque can build up and produce acids that erode tooth enamel, leading to cavities.

Causes Of Xerostomia (Dry Mouth)

Dry mouth can be triggered by various factors, such as:

  • Medical conditions like Sjögren's syndrome, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and Parkinson's disease
  • Certain medical treatments, especially chemotherapy and radiation therapy
  • Over 1,000 medications list dry mouth as a possible side effect
