What Is Root Canal Therapy?

A root canal is a comfortable, highly effective procedure used to save a tooth that has become infected or damaged on the inside. Deep within each tooth is a small chamber that contains the nerve and blood supply (the pulp). When bacteria reach this area—often from decay, cracks, or trauma—it can lead to pain, sensitivity, or swelling.
During a root canal, we gently remove the infected tissue, thoroughly clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and seal it to prevent future infection. The tooth is then restored—typically with a crown—to return it to full strength and function.
Modern techniques and technology make root canal treatment predictable, efficient, and similar in comfort to getting a filling. Most importantly, it allows you to keep your natural tooth and avoid extraction.
What to Expect
Comfort First: The area is fully numbed so you remain comfortable throughout the procedure
Thorough Cleaning: The infection is removed and the canals are carefully disinfected
Sealing the Tooth: The space is sealed to protect against reinfection
Final Restoration: A filling or crown strengthens the tooth for long-term use
Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
Why Save Your Natural Tooth?
Keeping your natural tooth helps maintain proper bite alignment, prevents shifting of surrounding teeth, and allows you to chew comfortably. With proper care, a tooth that has had a root canal can last for many years.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
