What Is Scaling & Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure used to treat gum disease (periodontal disease) by removing harmful bacteria and buildup from below the gumline.

When plaque and tartar accumulate beneath the gums, they can cause inflammation, bone loss, and infection. This leads to the formation of periodontal pockets—spaces where bacteria continue to thrive.

Scaling and root planing addresses this by thoroughly cleaning these areas and smoothing the root surfaces, allowing the gums to heal and reattach to the tooth.

What Happens During the Procedure?

  • Scaling:

We carefully remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from above and below the gumline, including deep periodontal pockets.

  • Root Planing:

The root surfaces are smoothed to eliminate rough areas where bacteria tend to collect, helping the gums reattach more securely.

  • Targeted Treatment:

The procedure is often completed in sections of the mouth to ensure comfort and thoroughness.

What to Expect

  • Comfortable Care: Local anesthetic is used as needed to keep you comfortable

  • Deep Cleaning Below the Gums: Focused treatment where infection is present

  • Healing Phase: Gums begin to tighten and reattach over time

  • Follow-Up Care: Maintenance cleanings and monitoring help keep the condition stable

Mild tenderness or sensitivity afterward is normal and typically resolves quickly.

Signs You May Need Scaling & Root Planing

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Swollen, red, or tender gums

  • Gum recession or “longer-looking” teeth

  • Loose teeth or shifting bite

Why It Matters

Treating gum disease early helps prevent bone loss, tooth loss, and more complex treatment in the future. Scaling and root planing is one of the most effective ways to restore gum health and protect your smile long-term.
